Description
- The figure 8 belay device is a hardware tool used in activities such as rock climbing for belaying, rappelling, and descending. It's called so due to its shape, resembling the number 8, and is typically made of aluminium or steel with a central hole and two side slots.
- To use it, the rope is threaded through the central hole, then looped through one side slot and back through the opposite slot to form a bight.
- The rope is attached to the climber's harness using a locking karabiner, and tension is maintained on the brake strand while pulling the rope through the device to control the climber's speed.
